World-Class Research
UCF College of Medicine faculty are at the forefront of aerospace medicine, cancer research, and improving public health.
Medicine In Space
Dr. Emmanuel Urquieta is an internationally recognized space medicine expert who leads our research on the health impacts of space travel with an emphasis on addressing these issues as more people go into space.
Killing Cancer Cells
Dr. Alicja Copik is developing technologies that “beef up” the body’s Natural Killer cells. Dr. Copik uses nanoparticles and genetic engineering to make the body’s first line of defense into better-armed cancer killers.
Fighting Malaria
Dr. Debopam Chakrabarti focuses his research on malaria, the world’s deadliest mosquito-borne illness. Dr. Chakrabarti is investigating using cancer drugs and identifying natural product-derived antimalarials to find new ways to treat malaria.

It takes a team to tackle cancer! 🏟️🏈🤝🧬🥼
We`re grateful for another year of support from the @OrlandoSportsFoundation and for being recognized at the @CureBowl. The funding helps expand the research of our cancer division lead, Dr. Annette Khaled, in her pursuit of halting cancer in its tracks.
Dr. Khaled`s lab is working with a promising peptide called "Z-TOP" that disrupts cancer cells to keep them from spreading. Her most recently awarded projects seek to study ways to prevent breast cancer metastasis and eliminate prostate cancer that has already spread.

Students at UCF’s Burnett School of Biomedical Sciences work throughout the year under experienced researchers to contribute to our understanding of science. And at the Burnett Fall Research Symposium, they had the opportunity to share their discoveries.
Research at this year`s symposium included insights as to why some suffer from allergies while others are unfazed and techniques to fight the deadliest and most resistant cancers.

Creating virtual learning spaces for the physicians of tomorrow 🫀🩻🥼
As part of the recent @UCFCECS Fall Senior Design Showcase, two groups of undergraduate students combined their computer science knowledge with College of Medicine faculty mentorship to develop innovative virtual reality aids for learning about the heart and understanding medical imaging.
The students that participated in these two research projects received invaluable experience and the technologies developed are ready to be further refined by another incoming group of UCF undergraduates.

Meet Michael Bassett and Melissa Deinys, two students who say UCF inspired them to pursue scientific discovery and innovation to solve problems in medicine and Florida’s coastal habitats - both of whom are graduating from UCF this weekend.
Bassett, graduating with a medicine-engineering double degree in molecular and cellular biology and mechanical engineering, wants to use his UCF training to create better surgical Instruments.
Deinys, an Order of the Pegasus honoree, discovered a pathogen that was threatening to kill Florida mangroves during an internship at Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden. Later, through her research at UCF she helped create a sustainable nutrient that acts like an antimicrobial solution while nourishing the plant. The product reduces pathogens by 95% and has now been approved for use across Florida.

We`re bringing the cosmos to the classroom🚀🏫
Space medicine expert Dr. Melanie Coathup partnered with @ucf.edu aerospace engineering graduate student and NASA intern Achintya Bairat for a series of interactive international video calls that illuminated STEM opportunities for students at her former primary school in Wales – and even brought them closer to outer space.
As part of a National Research Council Canada mission aboard a parabolic flight, Bairat brought and released a student-designed flight patch in microgravity, later sharing the footage with the students.
“We reminded them that I once sat in that very same classroom that they are in, and how important it is to be curious and to pursue your dreams,” Dr. Coathup said. “They, too, can go to Liverpool, London, Orlando and even to space if that is their heart`s desire.”
