Biography

Dr. Klapheke is a board-certified psychiatrist with specialization in consultation-liaison psychiatry and psychoanalysis/psychodynamic psychiatry. Dr. Klapheke began his medical career at the University of Kentucky College of Medicine and continued on to residency at the Mayo Graduate School of Medicine.

After completing his residency in adult psychiatry and a fellowship in child and adolescent psychiatry, he joined the psychiatry staff at the Menninger Clinic in Topeka, Kansas. While completing psychoanalytic training at the Topeka Institute for Psychoanalysis, Dr. Klapheke’s clinical work at Menninger included inpatient, outpatient, and consultation-liaison psychiatry. He also established the Menninger ECT Service.

He became increasingly involved with medical education and eventually became Director of the Karl Menninger School of Psychiatry, Director of the Menninger Medical Student Program, and Associate Dean for Psychiatry Training Programs. In addition, he served as a board examiner for the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.

Dr. Klapheke subsequently returned to Kentucky and continued his academic career in multiple positions at the University of Louisville School of Medicine. He became a full professor in the Department of Psychiatry, and served as Director of Psychotherapy Training in the Adult Psychiatry Residency Program. Clinically, he was Director of Transplant Psychiatry and also ran the Psychiatry Consultation-Liaison Service at Jewish Hospital in Louisville. He was a member of the evaluation and treatment teams at Jewish Hospital, involved in the introduction of the innovative procedures of hand transplantation and of the first fully implantable artificial heart. In 2005 he transitioned to the private practice of psychiatry, including transplant psychiatry and outpatient psychodynamic and psychopharmacologic therapy, while remaining an active faculty member at the University of Louisville Department of Psychiatry.

Dr. Klapheke is a Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, and a Fellow of the Academy of Psychosomatic Medicine.

The UCF College of Medicine welcomed Dr. Klapheke in April 2010. Dr. Klapheke serves as an Assistant Dean of Medical Education overseeing the third and fourth year curriculum at the University of Central Florida College of Medicine.  He served as the Psychiatry Clerkship Director from 2016 to 2019 and continues to coordinate the Psychiatry component of the second year Neuroscience and Behavior course.  His clinical work is currently in College Mental Health, and his current academic interest is focused on innovation in medical education, including the development of the Clinical Simulation Initiative online modules for use in medical student education in Psychiatry.
