Psychiatry Clerkship Orientation Module
Patient Care
PS-3501: Conduct a thorough psychiatric diagnostic evaluation, including a complete history and, when indicated, a physical examination of patients, considering patient age, gender, cultural background and psychosocial circumstances. (PC1 & PC2)
PS-3502: Communicate patient information clearly and concisely in oral presentations and document patient narratives, assessments, and plans in a structured format, ensuring documentation meets regulatory, ethical and medicolegal standards. (PC3 & PC4)
PS-3503: Formulate organized and prioritized differential diagnoses using the current Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) for patients presenting with psychiatric complaints, incorporating clinical reasoning and risk stratification. (PC5)
PS-3504: Develop diagnostic evaluation and treatment plans based on established psychiatric guidelines for patients presenting with psychiatric complaints, including laboratory testing, neuroimaging, psychological assessment and health prevention and maintenance strategies when indicated. (PC6 & PC7)
PS-3505: Assess and manage patients for acute psychosis, psychiatric emergencies and other common conditions (see required clinical experiences) including risk mitigation, stabilization, continuity of care and coordination of care. (PC8)
Knowledge for Practice
PS-3506: Demonstrate an analytic approach to applying knowledge of pathophysiology, epidemiology, clinical features, diagnostic criteria, course, and prognosis of commonly encountered psychiatric illnesses (see required clinical experiences). (KP1)
PS-3507: Demonstrate understanding of prevention and treatment strategies for major psychiatric disorders, including pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic therapies (including psychotherapy and behavior medicine) to provide acute and continuity of care. (KP2)
