Biography

Dr. Virgil Dawson is board-certified in family medicine. He received his medical education at the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond, Virginia and completed his residency at The Medical Center in Columbus, Georgia. Throughout his career Dr. Dawson has served in leadership roles at Orlando Health, South Seminole Hospital and Florida Hospital. Dr. Dawson also has extensive experience in Medical Informatics.

Dr. Dawson was welcomed to the University of Central Florida (UCF), College of Medicine in 2014. His primary role with UCF is as a physician at UCF Health. Prior to joining UCF, he was a physician at his own practice, Longwood Family Medicine, and a Physician Informatics Specialist at Orlando Health. He is a pioneer in meaningful use and implementing a Health Information Exchange in Central Florida. He served on the Board of Directors for Central Florida Regional Health Information Organization. He advocates for health information technology in the region through the various committees he has served on, which include the Physician Technology Committee at Florida Hospital and the EMR Committee for Standards and Quality Outcomes at Orlando Health. He has served several times on the Medical Executive Committee for Orlando Health and Florida Hospital. He has been the chairman of the Department of Medicine, the Department of Family Practice, the Hospital Leadership Committee, and the Medical Records / Utilization Review Committee. Dr. Dawson maintains professional memberships with the American Academy of Family Physicians, Florida Academy of Family Physicians. Seminole County Medical Society, the Association of Medical Directors of Information Systems, and the Health Information Management and Systems Society.
