Learn about the heart healing aspects of sesame oil at the next Luminary Series Presentation April 11 by Dr. Sampath Parthasarathy, holder of the new Florida Hospital Endowed Chair in Cardiovascular Sciences at the College of Medicine’s Burnett School of Biomedical Sciences.
Dr. Parthasarathy, Ph.D., MBA, is an internationally known cardiovascular scientist who also serves as Associate Director for Research at the Burnett school. Known to his colleagues as Dr. Sam, Dr. Parthasarathy will present his research on new ideas for treating heart disease.
Before joining the College of Medicine last November, Dr. Parthasarathy held the Klassen Chair of Cardiac Surgery, and Professor of Surgery at Ohio State University, where he was also a professor of internal medicine, and human nutrition.
Dr. Parthasarathy is a recognized expert in lipids and lipoproteins, who is credited with the co-discovery of a major cardiovascular concept – the fact that oxidized LDL cholesterol blocks arteries in the heart leading to atherosclerotic diseases. His areas of interest include arteriosclerosis, cardiovascular nutrition, and heart failure. His work led to the expectations that antioxidants and monounsaturated fat might be useful in the prevention of cardiovascular diseases.
Dr. Parthasarathy has a breadth of research experience, including studies on endometriosis, aspirin therapy and heart disease related to diabetes. The National Institute of Health (NIH) extensively funds his work and he has authored over 225 publications and a book on atherosclerosis. He has received over 23,000 citations of his research findings. has received numerous awards, including a Special Recognition award by the American Heart Association.
Dr. Parthasarathy received his Ph.D. from the Indian Institute of Science and did post-doctoral training at the Kyoto University- Japan, Duke University and the University of Minnesota. In addition to Ohio State, he has served at the University of California, San Diego, Emory University and the Louisiana State University.
