Three UCF College of Medicine students were chosen to receive scholarships from the University Student Government Association. Matthew Mui, Matthew Stillwagon and Kumail Merchant were selected from several applicants to receive the $3,000 awards toward their medical education.

“I’m actually from out of state… so the money will help a lot,” said Mui, a first-year medical student who is planning on going into Pediatrics or Internal Medicine.

All three recipients said they were proud to be chosen from a pool of such qualified applicants. Stillwagon, a second-year student at the College of Medicine, believes that his colleagues are destined for great things. “I have so much respect for the students who have come before me,” he said, citing the college’s charter class that will graduate in May.

More than 20 students applied for the scholarship by submitting two letters of recommendation, as well as a statement of interest and Curriculum Vitae. Second-year med student and scholarship winner Kumail Merchant says he is still surprised about being chosen “Some of my closest friends who are amazing individuals applied,” he said adding that he hoped the selection committee :thought I embodied what UCF is really about.” Merchant is an Orlando native, a UCF alumnus, and hopes to continue serving the Central Florida region after completing his medical education

The scholarship recipients were chosen by a UCF Scholarship Committee comprised of students, staff and faculty from various university offices and colleges.
