Biography
Peter Edelstein, M.D., FACS, FASCRS, received a dual Bachelor of Arts & Science with Distinction from Stanford University before completing medical school at the University of Chicago. During his General Surgery Residency at the University of California, San Diego, he spent two years as a NIH-supported research fellow in the UCSD Surgical Oncology Laboratory. Following residency, he completed a Colon & Rectal Surgical Fellowship at the University of Minnesota. Dr. Edelstein has practiced in respected academic medical centers as well as large private healthcare systems. Having recently served as a civilian surgeon for the United States Army at Fort Polk, Louisiana, he now serves as a surgeon and officer in the United States Army Reserves. Dr. Edelstein currently manages a busy surgical practice for HCA in Sanford, treating patients with complex benign and malignant gastrointestinal disorders as well as general surgical conditions. Outside of the hospital, Dr. Edelstein has spent more than a decade building and leading medical device start-up companies as an executive in Silicon Valley and serving as International Chief Medical Officer for a major global clinical decision support company. In addition to authoring books, book chapters, and articles for healthcare providers and the lay public, Dr. Edelstein has regularly appeared as a medical expert on radio, television, and the international healthcare lecture circuit. With a passion for teaching, Dr. Edelstein served as Associate Surgical Residency Program Director at the Stanford University School of Medicine, as well as proctor and mentor to numerous medical students, and he has been honored with numerous teaching awards.
