Kira Eickman, a fourth-year UCF College of Medicine student passionate about serving the community, has been honored by the Florida Board of Medicine.

The Chairman’s Medical Student Recognition Program recognizes medical students who embody leadership, professionalism, compassion and academic excellence while excelling in clinical practice and community service.

From an early age, Eickman believed that giving back to her community through medicine was her calling. After receiving her bachelor’s degree in psychology at the University of Alabama, she continued her education at UCF, where she felt she could thrive.

“I liked the idea of being part of a newer medical school that was still open to change and wanted to grow. I think that’s an exciting thing to be a part of,” said Eickman.

During her time at UCF, she has served as co-lab director for the KNIGHTS (Keeping Neighbors In Good Health Through Service) student-run free clinic at Grace Medical Home. She is president of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Student Interest Group and founder of “Young Mothers Empowerment Initiative,” a health education program to empower young mothers at the BETA School of Orange County.

“One thing I can tell you about Kira is she is incredibly dedicated to her community,” said Dr. Soraya Smith, assistant dean for students at the medical school.

Moving forward, Eickman is applying for residency in internal medicine. She encourages her peers to find a cause about which they are passionate and to keep exploring new ways to serve their community.

“Being a mentor role model is using the gifts that we’ve been given to inspire and help those that come before or after you. This award is such a big honor that I’m inspired to keep trying to make an impact in the community, keep representing UCF and be a positive role model,” she said.
