A College of Medicine student team placed third out of 29 teams at the recent 12th annual Southeast Regional Medical Wilderness Adventure Race (MedWAR), a competition that combines wilderness medicine with adventure racing.

In placing third, M.D. students Jon Beilan, Steven Bright, Ashley Curry and Luke Lin had the best finish ever in College of Medicine MedWAR history. The second UCF team of Shawna Bellew, Sara Danker, Christopher Jacobs and Brittany Moscato also finished the grueling competition, an accomplishment in itself.

The event, held April 14 in Fort Gordon, GA, tests and teaches wilderness survival and medical skills. Participants hike and race through the woods, orienting themselves with a compass, and along the way must answer medical trivia questions and respond to staged wilderness medical emergencies, which can range from dehydration to alligator attacks.
