A beaming Wandy Cruz-Velázquez proudly displays the certificate from the American Cancer Society praising the “outstanding dedication” of the College of Medicine’s 2012 Relay for Life team.
The College of Medicine team raised $2,217 through sponsorships of team members and by the sale of word jars, water and fruit, and “Penny Wars,” which contributed $187. Pennies were collected in jars that represented each floor in the college and students. To encourage competition, silver coins and dollars bills could be placed in an opponent’s jar. These were subtracted from the total number of pennies collected to determine the winner — which was the college’s first floor.
Employees who worked on the first floor were treated to a homemade dessert party of chocolate cake flan, lemon cake, carrot cake and other sweets prepared by instructional designer Debbie Kirkley, who is also a cancer survivor.
Wandy, the college’s coordinator of admissions/registration, served as captain of the 14-member College of Medicine team, which joined more than 300 other participants in walking around a closed track at Lake Nona High School for 18 hours – starting at 2 p.m. May 5 and ending at 8 a.m. May 6.
“It’s the cause that is important,” said Wandy. “Plus, we are in Lake Nona, so it is important for us to participate in our own community.”
Plans are under way for the 2013 Lake Nona Relay for Life, scheduled for April 6-7 at Lake Nona High.
