Burnett Classic Postponed Due To Rain But Raises $65,000

Released on 10.08.2013

October 7 started off sunny and picturesque at the Interlachen Country Club, a perfect day for the Inaugural Burnett School of Biomedical Sciences Golf tournament. But Mother Nature had other plans. Heavy rain set in during the second hole of play, causing the course to be too soaked for play. So organizers postponed the event and will reschedule the tournament for the spring of 2014.

The good news: The tournament raised over $65,000 for Burnett school graduate student fellowships and had more than 90 golfers, including UCF President John C. Hitt and Pat Campano, father of College of Medicine vice president for medical affairs and dean, Dr. Deborah German.  “The glass is always half full, and today it was really overflowing,” mused Dean German.  “That money goes to support graduate students who will do the research that will save the lives of our future children and grandchildren.”

The tournament honored the late Al and Nancy Burnett, devoted UCF supporters, whose generosity created the Burnett school. Plans are already underway to set a new date for the tournament that will be open to all fall participants.  “We invite everyone who’s become a part of this tournament to please come and be our guests,” said Charles (Chip) Roberts, the College of Medicine’s assistant vice president for development.  “Save your mulligans, and we’ll all be back to have a great time in the spring.”

In the meantime, Dr. German hopes to brush up on her own golfing skills. “I look forward to seeing you back here in the spring,” she said. “I’m told by Dad and one of the faculty members, I’ll be good enough to play by then!”
