During their first week of medical school, the College of Medicine’s first-year M.D. students conquered a scrubs relay race and water balloon toss, received iPads for interactive learning and joined student interest groups for specialties such as pediatrics, academic medicine and women’s studies. And now it’s class time.
After August 6’s traditional White Coat Ceremony, 100 new M.D. students were welcomed to the UCF Health Sciences Campus. During the Orientation Fair, they met faculty members, received a wrapped gift of a new iPad from the Harriet F. Ginsburg Health Sciences Library staff and signed up for college’s award-winning chapter of the American Medical Student Association.
Faculty, staff and students gathered for a pot-luck All-College celebration. And M-1s and their “big sibs” competed on the Tavistock Green in a Greek field competition. Each student is part of a four-class family named after a Greek god or goddess. Students dressed in costumes – including face paint – to symbolize their Greek families. This year’s winner: The Aphrodite Family. (Special thanks to ace photographer Alex Chacon who kept up with the two-hour test of endurance and even judged some of the competitions.)
With the addition of the class of 2016, the College of Medicine’s enrollment is now 280, a seven-fold increase in just four years.
