College of Medicine M.D. students will join forces with a group of physicians, physical therapists and physician assistants for a two-week medical mission trip to Peru in June. And they need your help.

The students will join the medical professionals and fellow students from two Peruvian medical schools to serve the people of Cuzco and Quillabamba. They will be taking vital signs, assisting with clinic pharmacies, and working with an attending physician to diagnose and treat medically underserved people in that country. With the help of translators, the students will also be able to practice their medical Spanish as they take histories and engage in dialogue with their patients. Each student must raise $2,400 for travel, food and housing.

“We hope this collaboration with Peruvian medical students will foster a spirit of cross-cultural community and enhance the sustainability of our efforts,” said College of Medicine M-1 student Sara Powers.

Those wishing to help the students may write a check Medical Campus Outreach. Please include “Peru 2012 – UCF” on the memo line and deliver the check to the Office of Student Affairs. You can also donate online at www.mcoaugusta.org/donate. Please follow the instructions after selecting “Donate as Guest” (Designation: SMI Cusco (Medical), Memo/Team Member: UCF).
