Take a healthy walk and raise money for heart disease research and education. The 2015 Greater Orlando Heart Walk is this Saturday, September 12, on the main UCF campus. The medical school has a team led by Dr. Deborah German, vice president for medical affairs and dean.

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in America and some of the Heart Association’s research dollars currently fund scientific studies at the College of Medicine.

Thanks to association funding, Dr. Sampath Parthasarathy, associate dean for research and holder of the Florida Hospital Endowed Chair in cardiovascular sciences, has developed a heart training fellowship for medical students. And faculty member Dr. William DeCampli is working to develop a self-powered Fontan as a treatment for congenital heart disease.

This year, the Orlando Heart Walk hopes to raise $1.5 million.
