Biography

I currently serve two roles here in the Burnett School of Biomedical Science: Medical Laboratory Science (MLS) Program Director and Associate Professor of Medicine. As Program Director it is my responsibility to provide oversight of the MLS program’s curriculum, accreditation, and clinical affiliations. As an Associate Professor I have the honor of teaching a variety of classes including clinical chemistry, hemostasis, immunohematology, clinical research, and selected medical careers. My academic training includes a Bachelor’s degree in Medical Laboratory Science and a PhD in Public Health with a specialization in Clinical Epidemiology. I am a board-certified Medical Laboratory Scientist and hold a Florida license as a Medical Laboratory Technologist.

My scholarship has focused in two key areas of medical laboratory practice: 1) medical error reduction and 2) scholarly teaching and learning in medical laboratory programs. I was a co-lead author in the development of the newest edition of the ASCLS Entry Level Curriculum in 2016. Additionally, I published and presented in a variety of venues. An emerging area of focus for me is on the importance of mindfulness as a tool to navigate academic trauma in the medical laboratory curriculum.

I am an active volunteer leader for the American Society for Clinical Laboratory Science (ASCLS) where I currently serve as the organization’s Secretary/Treasurer, chair its finance committee, and serve as a liaison to multiple standing committees. On campus I serve as a member of the Undergraduate Policy and Curriculum Committee (UPCC) and HS Buildings Safety Council.

Additionally, I work regularly with Diverse Health Hub (https://www.diversehealthhub.org) to produce educational videos that aim to empower patients by providing them knowledge about routine laboratory tests.
