Kathy Dong, MS-2

Our February student highlight features second year medical student Kathy Dong. Kathy has been at KNIGHTS clinic as a patient pair. Patient pair volunteers are an invaluable resource and aspect of KNIGHTS clinic and we are grateful to our amazing student volunteers who devote themselves to caring for the underserved neighbors in our community. We caught up with Kathy to ask her a few questions about her experience with KNIGHTS.

Tell us about your favorite experience at KNIGHTS Clinic.

My favorite experience was when I was able to take care of a patient who was concerned about colon polyps and had a family history of colon cancer. Coincidentally, I was in the GI/renal module and was able to utilize what I learned in class and apply them in a clinical situation. In addition, it was amazing to be part of a team to help this patient who initially came in crying worried about getting cancer to reassuring them.

How do you think volunteering at KNIGHTS Clinic will prepare you for your future career as a physician?

Volunteering helped me hone in on my interviewing skills and find my own “style.”

What do you enjoy most about volunteering at KNIGHTS Clinic?

The best part is definitely building patient rapport to a point where you get to laugh with your patient and enjoy each other’s company. It was also amazing to be able to spend hours to make sure they got comprehensive care ranging from health education to next steps that they have to take for their condition.

Thank you for all that you do Kathy! Stay tuned for future updates.
