About Elias A. Giraldo, M.D., M.S.
Dr. Giraldo is a board certified critical care and vascular (stroke) neurologist, clinician-educator and clinician-scientist who joined the faculty at the University of Central Florida College of Medicine in Orlando, FL as Professor of Neurology in August 2015. He became Director of the Neurology Residency Program of the University of Central Florida College of Medicine in February 2016. Sixty percent of his time is spent on activities related to Graduate Medical Education as Director of the Neurology Residency Program (education, research and administration), and 40% on clinical care at Osceola Regional Medical Center in Kissimmee, Florida. Working with residents and medical students while attending critically-ill patients is personally important for Dr. Giraldo, and provides the most valuable ideas for development of clinical programs, quality improvement and safety initiatives, as well as clinical research.
Dr. Giraldo was born and raised in Lima, Peru where he completed his medical studies at the Major National University of San Marcos (“Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos”). Dr. Giraldo received his M.D. degree in 1990. Following almost four years of neurosurgery residency in Lima, he completed a visiting fellowship in vascular neurosurgery at the University of Miami in 1993 where he spent two more years doing research in cerebrovascular disease and trauma. Dr. Giraldo did his internship at Medical College of Pennsylvania Hospital and he completed a neurology residency at the University of Vermont followed by a fellowship in cerebrovascular disease and neurological critical care at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia. After completion of his training, he was named Co-Director of the Stroke and Neurointensive Care Program at Medical College of Pennsylvania Hospital also in Philadelphia from 2001 to 2002. Dr. Giraldo served as Director of Clinical Stroke and Neurocritical Care at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis from 2002 to 2010 where he also completed a Master of Science in Epidemiology from 2006 to 2008. He worked at Mayo Clinic Division of Critical Care Neurology in Rochester from 2010 to 2011. Dr. Giraldo served as Director of the Stroke and Neurocritical Care Programs at Drexel University College of Medicine and Hahnemann University Hospital from 2011 to 2015. He worked at Florida Hospital Neuroscience Institute and Comprehensive Stroke Center from 2015 to 2016 prior to joining the University of Central Florida College of Medicine/HCA Graduate Medical Education Consortium.
Dr. Giraldo has authored or co-authored many peer review papers and book chapters. He serves in the editorial boards of three journals and as ad-hoc reviewer for a number of journals including Stroke, Circulation, Neurology and Neurocritical Care. Dr. Giraldo is also active in professional societies and as such he has been elected Fellow of the American Heart Association Stroke Council (FAHA), the American Academy of Neurology (FAAN) and the American Neurological Association (FANA).
