College of Medicine

Student FIRE Program

The Focused Individualized Research Experience (FIRE) is a unique module in the preclinical curriculum that allows every College of Medicine student to study an area of interest that brought them to medical school. This two year program provides students with training, tools and mentorship opportunities that enable the students to successfully conduct a rigorous, independent, and scholarly research project. Students may also pursue investigation in areas of service learning.

In their first year, students identify a research mentor and are responsible for developing a proposal including their hypothesis or question, specific aims, and methods and procedures. During the second year, students collect and analyze data and report on their findings. The module culminates with a mini-conference where both first and second year students present on their posters or study proposals.
