Making Our History
The University of Central Florida College of Medicine was established in 2006 by the Florida Legislature and the Florida Board of Governors to address the growing physician shortage nationwide and provide economic benefits to Central Florida and the state.
We welcomed an outstanding charter class of 41 students in August. The college will gradually increase class size and by 2013 will admit 120 students each year. The charter class had the highest average MCAT score and GPA of any incoming class of medical students in Florida this year, and with more than 4300 applicants, the college was among the most selective in the nation.
Each of the first 41 students received a full scholarship – tuition and living expenses – for all four years. This is an unprecedented opportunity in the history of medical education. Our charter class has been selected with care and will establish a permanent legacy for all classes to come.
As a new medical school, the college offers students opportunities not available anywhere else. Our M.D. program allows students to prepare for careers in every discipline of medicine and to focus on an individualized area of study and interest through research.

Breaking New Ground
Comprehensive and innovative, the UCF Health Sciences Campus at Lake Nona will be a state-of-the-art complex for medical education, health sciences education and biomedical research. The medical school is building strong partnerships with the surrounding medical city at Lake Nona and the Central Florida community. The emerging life sciences cluster will help transform the Central Florida economy. According to the most recent economic impact study, by 2017 the UCF College of Medicine, combined with the adjacent community partners, will help create more than 30,000 jobs and have a projected annual economic impact of $7.6 billion. The Burnett School of Biomedical Sciences is an integral part of the College of Medicine. In addition to the M.D. program, the College of Medicine includes undergraduate and graduate programs in Molecular Biology and Microbiology, Biotechnology and Biomedical Sciences housed in the Burnett School of Biomedical Sciences. The College of Medicine is committed to promoting excellence in undergraduate and graduate education, building innovative interdisciplinary research programs, and discovering solutions for important biomedical problems, while providing a highly creative environment to foster our educational programs.

Construction Continues
The Medical Education building and the Burnett Biomedical Sciences building comprise the UCF Health Sciences Campus at Lake Nona. Work on the Burnett building is expected to be fully completed soon. Classes at the new Medical Education building are scheduled to begin in August 2010. The medical city at Lake Nona also includes the completed Burnham Institute for Medical Research, as well as the Orlando Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Nemours Children’s Hospital, and M.D. Anderson Cancer Center Orlando Cancer Research Institute among others.
